-
Background and Purpose
Since 2009, the Korea Democracy Foundation (KDF) has biennially
convened the Seoul Democracy Forum to share Korea's invaluable
experience in the democratic movement with the global civil
society. This initiative seeks to explore innovative approaches for
advancing worldwide democracy and fostering human rights
development.
- In a significant evolution, the forum transitioned to an annual occurrence in 2021. Commencing in 2023, it will be rebranded as the 'KDF Global Forum,' marking an ambitious expansion to become the preeminent 'International Forum on Democracy' in the Republic of Korea and East Asia. Through hosting this forum, the KDF aims to assume a prominent international role in championing democracy and freedom, providing a platform for interaction among dedicated activists, experts, and international youth.
- Furthermore, in conjunction with the forum, the Research Institute of KDF will organize the 'Academic Conference on Democracy.' This endeavour not only underscores the foundation's commitment to solidifying the democratization movement's historical significance but also paves the way for its enduring legacy.
- The upcoming 2023 KDF Global Forum will convene KDF-International Goodwill Ambassadors, representatives from the International Peace and Public Corps, and participants from 13 nations, along with foreign researchers from Korea. A highlight of the event will be a captivating visitation program to Gwangju, offering participants an immersive historical field trip focused on democracy.
- Under the theme "Korean Democracy and International Solidarity: Sharing and Diffusion of Experience," this year's forum aims to explore overseas instances of solidarity and support for advancing democracy and freedom in Korea. The KDF enthusiastically anticipates engaging in insightful discussions and knowledge exchange during this milestone event.

2019 Seoul Democracy Forum
-
Background of 2019 SDF
- KDF plans to build the Namyoung-dong anti-communist interrogation office building as the Democracy and Human Rights Memorial Hall. Prior to start the construction project, KDF would like to hear from the International Memorial Museum experts to learn from their experiences.
- Second, the Democracy and Human Rights Memorial Hall aims to show the concrete examples of the dictatorship and violation against the human rights. Because that is the most important point to educate the future generation who do not know the past history. 2019 SDF will be the open learning ground for Korean civil society to learn from the globally renowned expertise..
- lastly, two main themes that KDF aims to realize through the Democracy and Human Rights Memorial Hall are democracy and human rights. KDF intends to reflect the experiences of the overseas memorial museums including their successful cases and lessons learned from the mistakes. It will be about the whole process of the establishment including planning, management, exhibition and education programs.
