Seed Pods of Democracy

‘민주주의 포스터 프로젝트: 민주주의 씨앗뭉치’는 민주화 운동 및 인권에 관한 작품을 수집·보존 하며, 민주주의와 인권 관련 문제를 널리 알리고 공유하고자 기획되었다. 본 프로젝트는 자본화, 양극화의 세계 속에서 계속 반복되는 국가폭력, 반민주주의, 인권 침해에 저항한 사건들을 살펴보고, 포스터라는 시각예술 형식을 통해 민주주의와 인권의 가치를 탐구하며, 디자인이 어떻게 사회 참여의 목소리를 낼 수 있는지 제안한다.

‘지금 여기’의 목소리를 대변해 온 51명의 참여 작가(팀)은 민주주의 체제, 민주주의의 핵심 가치, 국가폭력 및 인권 관련 이슈들을 역사적 시공간으로 확장하고 존엄, 공감, 기억, 비평, 대화, 경계, 회복, 미래, 지속, 연대와 같은 눈에 보이지 않는 가치들을 역동적인 시각언어로 해석해 낸다.

민주주의의 씨앗과 같은 이 포스터들은 민주주의의 과거와 현재에 대해 끊임없는 질문을 던지고, 민주화 과정에서 희생된 사람들을 깊이 애도하고, 사회적·역사적 약자들의 고통에 공감하며, ‘사람’과 ‘시민’을 살리는 연대의 힘을 이야기한다. 오래된 계몽이 아닌, 역동적이고 유기적인 미래를 상상하며.

The Democracy Poster Project: Seed Pods of Democracy was conceived to collect and preserve artistic work relating to democratization movements and human rights, as well as to share about problems that might threaten these values. The project uses posters as a medium to explore incidents involving resistance to state abuses, anti-democratic activities, and human rights infringements—events that persist in a world of intensifying polarization and domination by corporate interests. It explores the significance of democracy and human rights through the visual art medium of posters, and proposes ways that design can act as a voice for participation in society.

The 51 participating artists (or teams of artists), who have represented the voices of the “here and now,” expand on issues linked to the systems and key values of democracy, acts of state violence, and human rights within their historical and spatiotemporal contexts. They apply dynamic visual language in their interpretations of dignity, empathy, memory, critique, dialogue, boundaries, resilience, future, sustainability, and solidarity.

Imagining beyond stale enlightenment and instead to a dynamic, organic future, these posters are like seeds that raise questions about democracy’s present and its future while also mourning those lives lost in past strides toward democratization, shedding light on the suffering experienced by the vulnerable across society and history, and asserting the power of solidarity for the people and the citizenry.
